height

Type the width and the height you need, to fit your frame or your wall. A print can only be cut, never made bigger than the picture, so a size with a different shape loses a part of the image. We send you a digital mockup to approve before we print anything. The picture shown on this page does not show the real cut — only the mockup does.

For artworks or reproductions larger than 105 cm (approximately 41 inches) on any side, the frame will be shipped as a kit, disassembled. This method ensures safe delivery and prevents damage during transport.

Professional assembly required - this is not a DIY product.
The kit must be assembled and the canvas stretched by an experienced professional framer, using wood glue (not supplied), a canvas stretching plier and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries. Incorrect assembly or uneven canvas tension can permanently damage the artwork and is not covered by our warranty.

  • All solid wood bars are included, precisely cut to size.

  • Assembled with the screws provided, plus wood glue for the corner joints, which is not supplied and must be sourced by your framer.

  • Professional tools are required and not included: a canvas stretching plier (tensioner) and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries.

Important:
The corner joints require wood glue, the bars must be held with clamps until the glue is fully dry, and tightening the canvas on the assembled frame requires a canvas stretching plier. None of these are included in the kit. Please arrange an experienced professional framer before ordering this size.

Artist Biography

Early Life, Family and Training

Théodore-Joseph Canneel was born in Ghent on November 8, 1817. His early years were shaped by the practicalities of a printing house, where the smell of ink and the mechanics of reproduction were part of daily life. In 1830, at the age of thirteen, he began learning the craft of lithography in the same printing house where his father worked. This early immersion in the technical side of printmaking provided a foundation for his later work as a lithographer and painter.

As he grew, his focus shifted toward the fine arts. He became a student of the painter Pieter van Hanselaere, moving from the mechanical precision of the press toward the nuances of portraiture and genre painting. Between 1838 and 1841, he balanced his professional duties with formal training at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent. This period allowed him to refine his hand, transitioning from the structured lines of a lithographer to the more fluid requirements of a painter and draftsperson.

Professional Career and Academic Roles

His path moved from the practicalities of the printing house to the structured halls of the academy. After training under Pieter van Hanselaere, he began teaching at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent in 1843. This period of instruction was marked by a steady presence in the local art scene, where he helped shape the technical skills of his students through his own experience with lithography and painting.

By 1850, his role within the institution had shifted significantly when he was appointed Director of the Academy of Ghent. This leadership position placed him at the center of the city's artistic instruction for many years. His influence eventually extended beyond the classroom and the academy walls; in 1869, he took on the responsibility of Inspector for Belgian drawing schools and academies, overseeing the standards of instruction across the country.

His contributions to the Belgian art community were recognized through formal honors. He was named an Officer of the Belgian Order of Leopold, a distinction that acknowledged his long-standing service to the arts and his administrative leadership within the academic system.

Travels and Artistic Recognition

Between 1848 and 1850, Canneel left the familiar surroundings of Ghent to spend time in France and Italy. These years abroad allowed him to observe the light and forms of the south, a period that preceded his return to Belgium and his eventual appointment as director of the Academy in Ghent. His time in Italy, in particular, left a mark on his subject matter, as seen in his later depictions of Italian life.

His standing within the Belgian art community grew through several official appointments. He was named a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium. His influence extended to other institutions, as he also held a corresponding membership with the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen. These roles reflected a career built on both technical skill and academic contribution.

Recognition for his work reached beyond European borders. He was named an honorary member of the Philadelphia Academy, a distinction that placed his name among international circles of artists. His life was marked by these various honors, including being named an officer of the Belgian Order of Leopold.
