The house

Ordrupgaard, Gentofte, in a few lines

The History and Origins of Ordrupgaard

Ordrupgaard began as a private country home, situated near Jægersborg Dyrehave, north of Copenhagen, Denmark. The construction of the residence took place between 1916 and 1918. It was built by Wilhelm Hansen and Henny Nathalie Soelberg Jensen. The transition from a private residence to a public institution was shaped by the intentions of its founders. Wilhelm Hansen declared that the collection would be left to the Danish State. This decision ensured that the works gathered within these walls would remain accessible. Following this intent, Ordrupgaard opened to the public as a state-owned art museum in 1953.

The Architecture and Estate Design

The original mansion is a three-winged trellised country house designed in a neo-classical style. Architect Gotfred Tvede shaped the structure, creating a residence that feels deeply integrated into its surroundings. The estate extends beyond the main house to include a porter's lodge, a coach house, a shed, and a small half-timbered summerhouse. These structures maintain the quiet dignity of the original property. The surrounding park, laid out by landscape gardener Valdemar Fabricius Hansen, follows the English style. This expansive greenery provides a sense of openness, though it is punctuated by a French-inspired rose garden. The interplay between the structured floral arrangements and the more naturalistic English landscape creates a specific rhythm within the grounds. Light and shadow move across the paths and the various outbuildings, defining the space through subtle shifts in perspective.
