The Eclectic Style of Andrea di Giusto

Andrea di Giusto was a Florentine painter active during the transition from the late Gothic to the early Renaissance. Trained as a Garzone under Bicci di Lorenzo, his work is characterized by an eclectic approach, often mixing the motifs and techniques of masters such as Lorenzo Monaco, Bicci di Lorenzo, Masaccio, and Fra Angelico. He was a member of the Arte dei Medici e Speziali guild in Florence and was known for producing a variety of art, including triptychs, frescoes, and smaller craft objects like small tabernacles.

His career involved significant collaborations, including working with Masaccio on the Life of San Giuliano for the Polyptych of Pisa and assisting with the altarpiece for the Carmine church in Pisa. He also collaborated with Paolo Uccello in the Prato Cathedral. While he worked in Florence, much of his most significant output, including three major altarpieces, was created in the Florentine contado, or countryside.

Major Works and Artistic Legacy

Andrea's notable altarpieces were commissioned for various locations, including:

  • Sant’Andrea a Ripalta in Figline
  • Santa Margarita in Cortona
  • The Badia degli Olivetani di San Bartolomeo alle Sacce near Prato

In his later phase, his style shifted toward more stoic, flat figures, as seen in his triptych for San Michele in Moriano. His frescoes, such as those in the Cappella dell'Assunta in Prato Cathedral, were executed using a miniaturist technique, employing tiny, parallel brushstrokes to detail the panels. His son, Giusto d'Andrea, also became a painter, working alongside Neri di Bicci and Benozzo Gozzoli.
