Early Life and Artistic Training The story of Jean-Léon Gérôme begins in Vesoul, Haute-Saône, where he was born on 11 May 1824. His early years were marked by a natural inclination toward the pencil and brush, nurtured by the guidance of a local teacher, Claude-Basile Cariage. This initial instruction provided the necessary foundation for a young man whose ambitions would soon pull him away from the quietude of his birthplace toward the bustling heart of France. At the age of sixteen, in 1840, he arrived in Paris to seek greater heights.
