The Apex An oil painting, painted by hand for you alone

The Formative Years and Artistic Genesis

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Roberto Scafidi emerged from a rich tapestry of academic rigor and experimental passion. His journey into the visual arts began at the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes Lola Mora, where he laid the foundational stones of his technique. This period of intense study was not merely confined to the canvas; it was deeply intertwined with the rhythmic energy of the era's underground music scene. During the mid-1980s, Scafidi immersed himself in the worlds of punk rock and jazz, a dual devotion that would later inform the raw, energetic spirit found within his creative output. Following his early training, he refined his mastery under the guidance of Carlos Gorriarena, a period that bridged the gap between classical instruction and contemporary exploration.

The trajectory of Scafidi’s career took a transformative turn in 1991 when he was awarded the prestigious Georges Braque Award by the Embassy of France. This recognition granted him a scholarship to study at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, an experience that would fundamentally reshape his artistic vision. In the vibrant atmosphere of Paris, Scafidi engaged with a constellation of influential figures, including Michel Majerus, Rómulo Macció, and Luis Felipe Noé. These encounters provided him with a global perspective, allowing him to absorb the complexities of international contemporary art and integrate them into his burgeoning practice.

A Mastery of Color and Composition

Scafidi’s work is characterized by an extraordinary command over color and a profound exploration of geometric abstraction. His approach often eschews traditional representation in favor of a more visceral, textured experience. In notable works such as The Apex, one observes a meticulous mosaic-like pattern that dominates the canvas, drawing the viewer into an intricate arrangement of squares and rectangles. This technique involves the deliberate layering of numerous small colored elements to create a sense of depth and dynamism. The resulting surfaces are not merely flat planes of color but are instead living, breathing textures that invite close contemplation.

The emotional resonance of his palette is central to his ability to captivate an audience. Scafidi utilizes a carefully considered spectrum of hues—ranging from deep, contemplative blues and greens to the fiery intensity of reds and yellows—to convey complex emotional states. His compositions often reflect themes of interconnectedness and complexity, using repetition and pattern to stimulate both visual fascination and philosophical reflection. This ability to find beauty within simple, geometric forms allows his work to bridge the gap between the purely decorative and the deeply symbolic.

Legacy and Academic Contributions

Beyond the studio, Roberto Scafidi has established himself as a significant figure in art education and curation. His deep understanding of the structural elements of painting led him to hold various teaching positions, where he shared his expertise on color, composition, and the history of art. From lecturing at the IUNA (Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte) to conducting seminars on the evolution of 20th and 21st-century art, Scafidi has played a vital role in nurturing the next generation of artists and scholars.

His professional achievements are marked by numerous accolades, including the Kuitca Scholarship and several prestigious awards from institutions such as the Fundación Octubre. His work has been exhibited extensively, both within Argentina and internationally, with his pieces finding homes in private collections across Europe—including Paris, Milan, and Madrid—as well as in Chile and throughout South America. Through his dual roles as a practicing artist and an educator, Scafidi continues to influence the contemporary landscape, leaving a lasting imprint on the dialogue between tradition and experimentation.
