Professional assembly required - this is not a DIY product.
The kit must be assembled and the canvas stretched by an experienced professional framer, using wood glue (not supplied), a canvas stretching plier and clamps to hold the bars square while the glue dries. Incorrect assembly or uneven canvas tension can permanently damage the artwork and is not covered by our warranty.

  • All solid wood bars are included, precisely cut to size.

A Moment of Quietude: Picasso’s “Still Life with Gobleet” – A Window into 1914

Pablo Picasso's "Still Life with Gobleet," painted in 1914, is more than a simple arrangement of objects; it’s a distilled essence of the artist’s evolving sensibilities at a pivotal moment in his career. Measuring just 22 x 16 centimeters, this intimate work offers a surprisingly complex glimpse into the mind of a revolutionary artist grappling with form, perspective, and the burgeoning anxieties of a world on the cusp of immense change. The painting depicts a commonplace scene – a wine glass and a cup resting upon a table – yet Picasso transforms the familiar into something profoundly evocative through his masterful manipulation of space and color.

The immediate impression is one of quiet contemplation. The placement of the wine glass, angled slightly to the left, and the cup positioned towards the right creates a subtle dynamism within the composition, preventing it from feeling static. Noticeably, Picasso employs a fractured perspective, characteristic of his early Cubist explorations, though here it’s less overtly geometric than in some of his later works. The table itself seems to recede into an ambiguous space, blurring the boundaries between foreground and background. This deliberate distortion invites the viewer to actively participate in constructing the image, questioning what is truly ‘real’ within the painting.

The Figure in Shadow – A Reflection of Personal Turmoil

A crucial element often overlooked is the presence of a figure lying down in the background. While partially obscured by shadow, this reclining form suggests a state of repose, perhaps even sleep or rest. Given Picasso’s personal life at the time—marked by the loss of his sister and the instability of his relationships—this figure can be interpreted as a symbolic representation of vulnerability and melancholy. It's a poignant detail that adds layers of emotional depth to an otherwise seemingly simple still life, hinting at the artist’s own internal struggles.

The books scattered across the table further enrich this reading. They aren’t merely decorative; they represent knowledge, contemplation, and perhaps even a yearning for escape. Their placement—one on the left, the other closer to the center—creates a visual rhythm that complements the arrangement of the glasses and cups. The choice of these objects speaks volumes about Picasso's intellectual curiosity and his engagement with the world beyond the immediate scene.

Color and Technique: A Palette of Restraint

The color palette employed in “Still Life with Gobleet” is remarkably restrained, dominated by muted browns, ochres, and greys. This deliberate choice contributes to the painting’s overall atmosphere of tranquility and introspection. Picasso utilizes a broken brushstroke technique, applying paint in short, irregular strokes that create a sense of texture and movement. The subtle variations in tone suggest light and shadow, adding depth and volume to the objects within the scene. The use of *grisaille*, or monochrome painting, is particularly evident in the rendering of the table and background, emphasizing form over color.

A Timeless Moment – Reproduction for Today

Painted in 1914, a year marked by escalating tensions leading up to World War I, “Still Life with Gobleet” offers a rare glimpse into Picasso’s artistic process during a period of profound social and political upheaval. It's a work that transcends its simple subject matter, revealing the artist’s innovative approach to perspective, his exploration of human emotion, and his masterful command of color and technique. OriginalUniqueArt is proud to offer high-quality reproductions of this captivating piece, allowing you to bring this intimate moment of quietude into your home or office – a testament to Picasso's enduring legacy and the power of art to resonate across generations.

Artist Biography

The boy from Málaga

A child's first words in Málaga were “piz, piz,” a small attempt at saying pencil. This early pull toward the lead and paper was nurtured by his father, José Ruiz y Blasco, who taught him the basics of figure drawing and oil painting. The boy learned to copy the masters and draw from plaster casts under a disciplined eye. As he grew, the family moved through A Coruña and Barcelona. These years were marked by the quiet weight of loss, particularly the death of his sister, Conchita, from diphtheria when she was only seven. Such shadows would later find their way into the heavy, blue-green tones of his early work.

By thirteen, he was already taking entrance exams for advanced classes in Barcelona, finishing in a week what took others a month. His hands moved with a precision that even his father noticed, once seeing him paint over an unfinished sketch of a pigeon with such accuracy that the instructor realized the student had surpassed him. He eventually moved to Paris, a city where he would spend much of his adult life, constantly shifting his focus from one way of seeing to another.

Shifting palettes and fractured forms

The early twentieth century saw his work move through distinct phases of color and mood. There was the Blue Period, where the canvases were filled with beggars, the blind, and the lonely, rendered in somber shades of blue. This gave way to the Rose Period, a time when pinks, oranges, and reds appeared, often featuring the figures of circus performers like harlequins and acrobats. These years showed a man reacting to his own life and the world around him through the temperature of his palette.

In 1907, the way he handled space changed fundamentally with Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Influenced by African masks and Iberian sculpture, he began to break objects into geometric shapes. Alongside Georges Braque, he developed Cubism. This involved two main stages:

  • Analytic Cubism: A method of fragmenting objects into muted, geometric pieces as if dissecting the form itself.
  • Synthetic Cubism: An approach that brought in collage elements like newspaper clippings and fabric scraps to add texture and new layers.

A life of constant change

His work never settled into a single way of being. He explored Neoclassicism with large, monumental figures and later engaged with the imagery of Surrealism, using distorted perspectives to tap into the subconscious. The violence of the Spanish Civil War left its mark on his canvas in 1937 through Guernica. This large oil painting used a stark palette of black, white, and grey to show the suffering of a bombed town, featuring a gored horse, a bull, and screaming women. It remains a heavy, monochromatic response to the chaos of war.

In his later years, he continued to experiment with ceramics, sculpture, and printmaking. He even created large-scale public works, such as the 1967 steel sculpture in Chicago, which was inspired by the head of his Afghan Hound, Kabul. He died in Mougins, France, leaving behind a massive collection of work that spans over seventy-six years of experimentation.
