Born in Madrid on October 14, 1737, Castillo emerged from a world where the flamboyant flourishes of the Rococo were beginning to yield to the disciplined rigor of Neoclassicism. His early life was marked by an extraordinary precocity; at just ten years old, he was already serving as an assistant in the preparatory drawing classes at the prestigious Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. The trajectory of Castillo’s talent was shaped by the generous patronage of the Spanish court, most notably through the support of José de Carvajal y Lancaster. This connection allowed the young artist to embark on transformative journeys to Italy, where he studied under the direction of the celebrated Corrado Giaquinto. These years in Rome were not merely educational but deeply formative, as they exposed him to the grandeur of classical antiquity and the sophisticated techniques of Italian masters. Upon his return to Spain, Castillo brought with him a refined sensibility that would soon make him a central figure in the Spanish artistic renaissance, blending the warmth of Mediterranean light with the structured elegance of the Neoclassical movement.

Joining the Royal Tapestry Factory, he became a master of creating cartones—the large-scale preparatory paintings used to guide weavers.
