Artist Biography
Bashir Makhoul: Geometry and Grief
Bashir Makhoul (b. 1963, Galilee, Palestine) is a conceptual artist whose work explores themes of identity, conflict, and memory through striking geometric abstractions imbued with subtle emotional resonance. Born in the Israeli Galilee region, Makhoul pursued his artistic education extensively abroad, culminating in a PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1995. This formative experience profoundly shaped his artistic vision and established him as a leading voice within contemporary art discourse. His artistic journey began with an interest in Islamic geometric patterns—a heritage deeply rooted in Palestinian culture—which he skillfully incorporates into his compositions. These intricate designs serve not merely as decorative elements but as vehicles for conveying complex ideas about cultural continuity, resilience, and the impact of historical trauma. Makhoul’s meticulous approach to technique – primarily oil on canvas – prioritizes precision and formal elegance, reflecting a dedication to mastering the visual language of abstraction. Makhoul's artistic output has garnered international acclaim, showcasing at prestigious venues such as the Hayward Gallery in London, Tate Liverpool, Saatchi Gallery in London, the Liverpool Biennial, Jordan National Museum, NCA Lahore Pakistan, Haus am Lutzowplatz Berlin, UTS Gallery in Sydney, Australia and Elga Wimmer Gallery in New York. Notably, his participation in the Venice Biennale (2013) cemented his reputation as a significant figure in global contemporary art. A particularly poignant exploration of grief and remembrance is evident in *The Darkened Room* (1998), Makhoul’s seminal video installation. This piece delves into his relationship with his grandmother shortly before her passing, capturing the artist's emotional response to her recorded voice—a testament to the enduring power of familial bonds and the profound impact of loss. The installation utilizes a carefully constructed space and sound system to amplify the auditory experience, creating an immersive environment that underscores the central theme of bereavement. Furthermore, Makhoul’s artistic engagement extends beyond visual art into scholarly pursuits. He authored *The Origins of Palestinian Art* (2013), published by Liverpool University Press, examining the historical development of Palestinian artistic traditions. His subsequent publications include *Contemporary Art in Global Asia,* published by Routledge, and he serves as editor of *Palestinian Video Art,* showcasing innovative cinematic explorations within the context of Palestinian identity. Currently, he holds the position of President at University Canada West in Vancouver, Canada—a testament to his continued commitment to artistic education and intellectual leadership.- Notable Exhibitions: Hayward Gallery, Tate Liverpool, Saatchi Gallery, Liverpool Biennial, Venice Biennale, Aichi Biennial
