Artist Biography

The Life and Art of Annie Swynnerton

Annie Louisa Swynnerton was a British painter known for her portraiture, landscapes, and symbolist works. Born in Kersal, United Kingdom, she trained at the Manchester School of Art and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. During her formative years, she spent time in Rome alongside her friend Susan Isabel Dacre. Swynnerton’s artistic practice was characterized by a sculptural grasp of form and a use of fresh, broken colour. Her work often incorporated elements of Neoclassicism, Pre-Raphaelitism, and Impressionism. She was noted for her robustly painted figures and was considered a daring painter of the nude.

Her career was marked by significant professional milestones, including being the first woman elected as an associate of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1922. Swynnerton was an active supporter of the women's suffrage movement and was a signatory to the 1889 National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies' Declaration in Favour of Women's Suffrage.
