Architectural Highlights

The current building, constructed between 1927 and 1933, is a prime example of Art Deco design. Originally known as the Masonic Peace Memorial – built to honor the 3,225 Freemasons who lost their lives in World War I – it covers two and a quarter acres and features:

  • The magnificent Grand Temple, capable of seating 1,700 people, adorned with mosaic work and symbolic representations.
  • Bronze doors designed by Walter Gilbert, each weighing over a ton.
  • A restored pipe organ by Henry Willis & Sons, renowned for its exceptional sound quality.
  • 26 uniquely ornate Masonic temples (lodge meeting rooms), each distinct in style.

History

The site has been associated with Freemasonry since 1775, initially housing the Freemasons' Tavern and offices. Over time, the building underwent several transformations:

  • First Building (1775-1860): Designed by Thomas Sandby and later expanded upon by John Soane.
  • Second Building (1862-1925): Renovated and extended under Frederick Pepys Cockerell, but partially demolished after a fire in 1883.
  • Current Building (1933 – Present): The third iteration, designed by Henry Victor Ashley and F. Winton Newman as a memorial to fallen Freemasons.
