A Life Between France and Belgium

Born in Bordeaux, France, Martin Léonce Chabry was encouraged by his family to pursue his artistic vocation. After studying at the École Municipale de Dessin et de Peinture, he moved to Paris to study in the studio of Constant Troyon. During his time in Barbizon, he encountered several notable artists, including Millet, Daubigny, Diaz, and Rousseau, and potentially Courbet.

His travels led him to Flanders and Belgium, where he met various artists such as Willem Roelofs, Louis Robbe, Alfred Verwee, and the Stevens brothers. While he is considered one of the fathers of the École de Tervueren, he faced a unique cultural struggle, being viewed as "too French" in Belgium and "too Belgian" in France. In 1862, he married Julie Collart in Brussels.

Artistic Travels and Recognition

Chabry's career saw significant recognition from royal patrons. The museum in Bordeaux purchased his first canvas in 1867, and King Leopold II of the Belgians purchased a work two years later. Due to health recommendations for his emphysema, he spent time in Sauternes and later represented the region of Saint-Georges de Didonne between 1872 and 1880.

In 1881, he undertook an extensive journey through Egypt, Palestine, and Syria. Following this, a personal exhibition of his Oriental travels opened in Brussels in 1882, which resulted in a second purchase by the King of the Belgians. He passed away in Brussels in 1882.
