A Life Shaped by Light and Shadow

Joseph Frank Currier was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 21, 1843. His early years in America provided the foundation for a career that would eventually lead him far across the Atlantic. In the mid-1860s, he began his formal training in Boston under Samuel Lancaster Gerry. During the summers of 1867 and 1868, he sought further instruction in Deerfield, Massachusetts, studying with George Fuller.

The pull of Europe proved strong for this young painter. In April 1869, Currier left the United States to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. This period of international movement continued as he traveled through France and eventually settled in Munich. From 1870 to 1872, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, a city that would become a central part of his life for nearly three decades. He lived and worked among various German locations, including Polling and Schleissheim, becoming part of an American art colony led by Frank Duveneck.

The end of his life was marked by personal tragedy. Following failed investments in the stock market, Currier became despondent. On January 15, 1909, he died in Boston after jumping in front of a train.

Technique and Artistic Expression

Currier’s work was defined by a deep connection to the natural world. As a pleinairist, he frequently sketched outdoors to capture the changing moods of the landscape. His approach to different media allowed him to explore various textures and light effects. He worked with oils, watercolors, and pastels, and produced drawings in both pencil and charcoal.

His technical skill was particularly notable in his use of charcoal. He developed a unique wet technique in charcoal that helped him articulate forms like tree branches through dark lines. In his landscapes, he often used broad tonal masses, created with rubbings and smudges, to represent the billowing canopies of trees. This method focused on the overall impression of a scene rather than botanical precision.

His style evolved significantly over time:

  • He was associated with the Munich School, known for its bold brushwork and strong chiaroscuro.
  • In 1878, his watercolor and drawing exhibitions in New York led others to label him an Impressionist.
  • His later work expanded into a more gestural application of paint, moving toward the heart of expressionism.
  • He utilized a bravura style that emphasized energetic and expressive movement on the canvas.

Legacy and Recognition

Though his active period of painting lasted only twenty years, from 1873 to 1893, Currier left behind a significant body of work. He was a co-founder of the Society of American Artists and maintained a connection with the Boston Art Club. His exhibitions reached far beyond his home, appearing in Germany, London, and various parts of the United States.

The permanence of his contribution is seen in the many institutions that hold his works today. His paintings and drawings can be found in several prominent collections, including:

  • The Smithsonian American Art Museum
  • The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
  • The Brooklyn Museum
  • The Philadelphia Museum of Art
  • The Art Institute of Chicago
  • The Cincinnati Art Museum
  • The Harvard Art Museums

His son, Bertram Herbert Currier, also became a notable figure in the musical world, playing cello with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The history of Joseph Frank Currier remains tied to the development of American realism and the influence of European academic training on the New England art scene.
