The Life and Career of John Hayes

Born in 1786, John Hayes established himself as a dedicated British portrait-painter during a period of significant social transition. His professional trajectory spanned the Regency and early Victorian eras, a time when the demand for formal likenesses remained a cornerstone of British artistic practice. He maintained a steady presence within the institutional art world, marking his debut at the Royal Academy in 1814. This first exhibition signaled the beginning of a long-standing relationship with the Academy, where he continued to exhibit his work until 1851.

Hayes built a successful practice centered on the nuances of the human face. While his primary focus remained the portrait, he occasionally ventured into subject painting to diversify his output. His ability to capture the character of his sitters earned him a respected position among his contemporaries. He lived to the age of 80, passing away in 1866 after a career that witnessed the shifting aesthetics of the nineteenth century.

Notable Portrait Commissions and Works

Hayes established a steady practice as a portrait painter, contributing primarily to the Royal Academy throughout much of his career. His ability to capture likeness was particularly evident in his 1846 oil on canvas portrait of the historian and writer Agnes Strickland. This work, which depicts the author in a black velvet dress while holding a scroll, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1847. The portrait was later displayed at the National Gallery.

The likeness of Strickland proved influential beyond the canvas. An engraving of the portrait was produced by Frederick Christian Lewis, which subsequently served as the frontispiece for the 1851 publication of her Lives of the Queens of England. This reproduction ensured that her image accompanied her historical research, bridging the gap between fine art and the literary circles of the era.
