A Life in Color and Form

Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, to parents Theodore Goodridge Roberts and Frances Seymour Allen, Goodridge Roberts was a Canadian painter whose artistic journey spanned several decades. His formal training took him from the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal to the Art Students League of New York, where he studied under John Sloan, Boardman Robinson, and Max Weber between 1926 and 1928. His diverse body of work included:

  • Landscape paintings
  • Still lifes
  • Figure paintings
  • Interiors

His career was marked by significant institutional involvement, including being a charter member of both the Eastern Group of Painters and the Contemporary Arts Society. During the period from 1943 to 1945, he served as an Official Second World War artist for the Royal Canadian Air Force, stationed in England.

Recognition and Legacy

Roberts' reputation grew through numerous exhibitions and prestigious honors. In 1952, his work was selected to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale alongside Emily Carr, David Milne, and Alfred Pellan. His technical skill was recognized by the National Gallery of Canada, which awarded him the Glaxebrook award in 1959 for a landscape painting. Other notable achievements include:

  • Winning the A. J. Casson Award in 1964
  • Becoming a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1956

Beyond his own studio, Roberts was a dedicated teacher, holding positions at the Art Association of Montreal and serving as the resident artist at Queen's University and the University of New Brunswick.
