Untitled

I start with a particular gesture, or thought or idea, and then change it over and over again until I find a place where it surprises me, where it doesn’t quite rest.—Vincent FecteauVincent Fecteau’s carefully crafted sculptures belie the simplicity of the materials used to create them. His complex and eccentric forms require months of observation and refinement, as he cuts and reattaches papier-mâché fragments to produce convoluted, seemingly impossible shapes. Once painted, the smooth and undulating lines of Fecteau’s sculptures suggest painterly gestures suspended in three dimensions. The pink, purple, and dark grey of Untitled emphasize the work’s soft curves and crevices, while green accents highlight the sculpture’s creases and pockets. Its rounded edges and gentle protrusions come to resemble bodily forms: a turned shoulder or the curve of a neck. Viewed in the round, Untitled does not rest; instead, it slowly reveals an enigmatic world of possibilities.
