Collectible Description

Prashant Pandey comes from a family of marble sculptors in Jaipur who have been practicing the art for at least four consecutive generations. But in stark contrast to this tradition of chipping away at stone to create (sacred) statues of gods and goddesses, Pandey works with that which is discarded and often ostensibly ‘impure’. He is known for recycling objects that are past their use value—from marble blast and chunks of tar to visceral rejects like urine, sweat and blood—to create artworks that question cultural notions of utility and waste.अर्थ | Artha (2014) is an installation in the shape of a diamond, a universal symbol of prosperity, wealth and vanity. The seductive red translucence of this sculpture gives way to shock on encountering the objects from which it derives its colour–10,000 discarded slides of blood containing blood drawn from a large number of people including the artist. In creating a likeness of one of the most precious commodities in the world in blood slides that are arranged like brickwork, Pandey creates a juxtaposition that evokes multiple connections between money, violence and mortality. The work acts as an unsettling interruption, forcing a confrontation with the sheer corporeality of our existence. As Pandey points out, the Sanskrit word ‘Artha’ refers both to the pursuit of material wealth and the quest for meaning. According to him, the work seeks to recall the sacrifices made in the course of colonisation and the quest for land, power and wealth, and asks questions about “the price of progress and the relationship between worldly possessions and the purpose of life”.

Artist Biography

The Architect of Modern Political Landscapes

In the intricate tapestry of contemporary Indian political history, few figures possess the multifaceted complexity of Prashant Kishor Pandey. Born in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, India, Pandey has carved a niche for himself not through traditional artistry, but through the masterful orchestration of digital forensics, strategic communication, and large-scale political mobilization. His journey is one defined by a profound intersection of technology and human psychology, where data serves as the pigment and public sentiment acts as the canvas upon which modern democratic movements are painted.

Before his emergence as a pivotal strategist on the national stage, Pandey’s professional foundations were laid in the rigorous fields of public health and digital engineering. For eight years, he dedicated himself to United Nations-funded public health programs, an experience that undoubtedly instilled in him a deep understanding of grassroots connectivity and the logistical complexities of large-scale human systems. This period of service provided the analytical rigor and empathetic insight that would later become the hallmarks of his strategic interventions.

A Legacy of Strategy and Controversy

The narrative of Prashant Pandey is inextricably linked to some of India's most significant political shifts and legal complexities. He rose to prominence through his role as an IT consultant with the Special Task Force during the investigation into the Vyapam scam. This period was marked by intense scrutiny and high-stakes digital forensics, where he navigated the murky waters of state-level corruption investigations. While his involvement led to significant legal challenges and allegations regarding the use of collected records, Pandey maintained that his actions were driven by a commitment to exposing systemic failures within the state government.

It was during this era of intense political friction that his ability to shape public perception began to manifest on a grander scale. His work with Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG) marked a turning point in Indian electoral history. By conceptualizing and executing sophisticated, data-driven campaign strategies, he played an instrumental role in the landmark 2014 Lok Sabha election victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This achievement signaled the arrival of a new era of "election management," where digital precision and narrative control became as vital as traditional ground campaigning.

The Evolution of a Political Strategist

As his reputation grew, so did the breadth of his influence. Pandey’s career evolved into a nomadic mastery of various political landscapes across India. He became a sought-after architect for diverse political entities, demonstrating an uncanny ability to adapt his methodologies to different ideological frameworks. His portfolio includes strategic contributions to:

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he helped solidify a dominant national presence.
  • The Indian National Congress (INC), navigating the complexities of traditional party structures.
  • Regional Powerhouses, including the YSRCP, DMK, and TMC, proving his versatility across linguistic and cultural divides.
  • The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), contributing to the rise of insurgent political movements.

Beyond the mere mechanics of winning elections, Pandey’s work represents a historical shift in how power is contested in the digital age. His legacy is not found in static monuments, but in the shifting tides of voter behavior and the increasingly sophisticated use of information technology in the democratic process. He remains a figure of intense debate—a symbol of both the potential for technological transparency and the formidable power of strategic manipulation in the modern political arena.
