Artist Biography
Masud Ashley Olufani: Sculptor, Actor, and Advocate for Healing Through Art
Atlanta-based Masud Ashley Olufani is a multifaceted artist whose creative endeavors span sculpture, performance art, filmmaking, and writing—all united by a profound exploration of trauma and identity. Born in Los Angeles in 1980, Olufani’s artistic journey began with formal training at Morehouse College and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where he earned an MFA in Sculpture in 2013. This foundational education instilled in him a meticulous approach to craft and a dedication to conveying complex narratives visually. Olufani's work consistently confronts difficult subjects—particularly the legacy of transatlantic slavery and its enduring impact on communities worldwide. His sculptural pieces often utilize textured surfaces and evocative forms to represent resilience, vulnerability, and remembrance. Notably, he spearheaded “Blocked,” a multimedia performance project commemorating spaces scarred by trauma related to the slave trade, demonstrating his commitment to artistic activism alongside creative expression. This project underscores Olufani’s belief that art can serve as a catalyst for dialogue and healing. Beyond sculpture, Olufani has cultivated a successful acting career, appearing in roles across television and film including “Greenleaf,” “Devious Maidens,” “Satisfaction,” “Nashville,” “All Eyez On Me,” and “Retroreport.” His performances bring an additional dimension to his artistic practice—a sensitivity to human experience that informs his visual storytelling. He’s currently collaborating on a new project with PBS, furthering his commitment to engaging audiences with impactful narratives. His contributions extend beyond performance; Olufani is a published writer whose articles have graced publications like Burnaway and Baha'i Teachings. Furthermore, he served as a consultant for the “Jacob Lawrence Struggle” exhibition catalog, highlighting his understanding of artistic context and scholarly engagement. He’s also held residencies at prestigious institutions such as Vermont Studio Center, Hambidge Center for Arts and Sciences, and Creative Currents in Panama City, fostering continued growth and experimentation within his artistic practice. Olufani's recognition includes awards from the Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA), IDEA Capital Grant, Southwest Airlines Art & Social Engagement Grant, and the MOCA GA Artist Project Grant—affirming his dedication to both artistic excellence and social responsibility. His involvement in Dakar Biennale 2024 signifies a global acknowledgment of his talent and commitment to confronting challenging themes through art.
