Artist Biography

John Uzzell Edwards: The Poet of Graffiti

John Uzzell Edwards, born October 10, 1934, in Wales, stands as a singular figure in contemporary art – a painter who simultaneously embraced the rebellious spirit of graffiti and explored profound philosophical themes rooted in Shakespearean literature. His artistic journey began with formal training in painting, nurtured by his father, fellow Welsh artist John Uzzell Edwards, establishing him within a lineage dedicated to visual storytelling. This formative influence would prove pivotal in shaping his distinctive style and worldview. Edwards’s artistic exploration extended beyond traditional canvases. Recognizing the transformative potential of urban spaces, he transitioned into graffiti art under the moniker “Pure Evil,” collaborating with Alan Brown and Nick Philip on the anarchic project Anarchic Adjustment in the early 1990s. This venture simultaneously showcased his creative versatility and aligned him with a burgeoning countercultural movement. Simultaneously, Edwards delved into electronic ambient music, releasing albums like "Octopus" 1, 2 & 3 and “Dada” (under Drum Machine Circle) solo, alongside Pete Namlook, furthering his artistic interests beyond visual mediums. His collaborations with Thomas Bullock (“Supergroup”) and Tetsu Inoue ("Audio") solidified his reputation as a multidisciplinary artist pushing boundaries of sonic expression. The Pure Evil Gallery, established by Edwards himself in Shoreditch, London, serves as both studio and testament to his unwavering dedication to his craft. Notably, in 2011, he initiated a fundraising campaign utilizing limited edition prints to aid victims of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami – demonstrating compassion alongside artistic ambition. His residency at Quin Arts Hotel in New York City in 2016 provided inspiration for “Andy Warhol,” resulting in a body of work characterized by repetition art and exploring the visual language of iconic imagery. The exhibit, curated by DK Johnston, highlighted Edwards’s signature eye drips technique on paper and canvas, accompanied by a video installation directed by Bill Mack. Edwards's artistic vision is deeply informed by Shakespearean literature. Recurring motifs of “Once More Unto The Breach” and “When I Was Born,” drawn from Henry V and Pericles respectively, exemplify his preoccupation with themes of courage, resilience, and existential contemplation—concepts he translates into striking visual compositions. His distinctive eye drip technique, a method developed over years of experimentation, imbues his paintings with an ethereal quality, capturing fleeting moments of emotion and conveying complex ideas through subtle textural variations. Ultimately, John Uzzell Edwards’s legacy resides in his ability to synthesize seemingly disparate artistic disciplines—painting and music—into a cohesive aesthetic that transcends conventional categorization. He remains a compelling figure within the art world, embodying both intellectual rigor and visceral creativity – an artist who dared to confront profound questions about humanity while simultaneously engaging with the dynamism of urban culture.
