Artwork Description

Wings with life energy flying toward dreams In the artwork , the artist attempts to infuse new life into inorganic mechanical components. The elements are interconnected and affected by each other within the artwork, and move according to a regular order and rhythm. Through this process, they form an organic world where machine and nature resemble each other. In addition, the wings in the artwork move rapidly and then slowly, each by itself and then together, creating beautiful movements. The wings are not complete, and exist only in half form, but as they are reflected in the mirror, they become complete. Through this artwork, the artist delivers a message which tells us that if we have hope, we will be able to spread one whole wing toward our dream. Visitors can send out their wishes and aspirations for their dream along the wing.

Unlike many artists of his era focused on static representations, Choi embarked upon an artistic journey dedicated to exploring dynamism and capturing fleeting moments, establishing himself as one of Korea’s foremost proponents of kinetic art. His distinctive style blends influences from Bauhaus principles with a deeply rooted connection to Korean tradition, resulting in artworks that resonate with both intellectual rigor and visceral emotion.

The Genesis of Kinetic Sculpture

Choi Hyun-seok’s artistic breakthrough arrived with his exploration of kinetic sculpture—artworks incorporating movement as an integral component—a medium that distinguishes him from many of his contemporaries. His meticulous attention to detail ensures that each sculpture operates smoothly, producing mesmerizing visual effects that captivate audiences.
  • Conceptual Framework: Beyond mere technical prowess, Choi’s kinetic sculptures convey profound conceptual ideas about change, transformation, and the relationship between art and science. He strives to capture ephemeral qualities—such as wind or vibration—translating them into tangible sculptural forms, demonstrating a remarkable ability to synthesize artistic vision with scientific precision.
