charles robert leslie, a prominent figure in british art, was born on october 19, 1794, in london to american parents. at the age of five, he moved with his family to philadelphia, where he completed his education. initially, leslie was apprenticed to a bookseller, but his true passion lay in painting and theatre.artistic career
in 1811, leslie arrived in london with letters of recommendation, securing support from notable artists like benjamin west. he enrolled in the royal academy schools in 1813, where he won two silver medals. influenced by west and fuseli, leslie initially explored grand art themes, but soon discovered his true calling in genre painting.notable works and style
