Together with her husband, Manoel Pinto de Oliveira, a freedman, Germana managed to save the amount of 180,000 réis to buy her freedom. When she was sixty years old, she filed a lawsuit complaining about the severe captivity to which she was subjected by her master. She argued that she was already old and still continued to suffer physical punishment. She also claimed that she was married, but was living apart from her husband. During the trial of the lawsuit, Germana was assessed at 250,000 réis by her master, and later at 150,000 réis due to her advanced age and poor health. As the value set for her was 30,000 réis below the amount that had been deposited, she requested this difference to be returned to her.
