Arthur Knowles was born in Manchester, England, around 1875, into a family of industrial workers—a formative experience that instilled in him an appreciation for the tangible world and a keen observation of human activity. Knowles’s foray into art began modestly, initially exploring watercolor landscapes before gravitating towards marine painting—a genre that captivated him with its dramatic interplay of light and shadow, its depiction of turbulent seascapes, and its connection to the history of seafaring exploration.
