Born in Chicago, United States, Karl Benjamin began his journey into the world of art quite unexpectedly. Benjamin became recognized as one of the "Four Abstract Classicists" in a 1959–60 exhibition that served as a West Coast alternative to Abstract Expressionism. His work is characterized by:

Throughout his career, he balanced his studio practice with a long tenure as a teacher, including a role as a professor and artist-in-residence at Pomona College.
