          Biography

          A Life Shaped by Tradition

Joseph Jean François Stallaert was born in 1825 in Merchtem, a small town within the Flemish-speaking part of Brabant. His early years were far removed from the world of oil and canvas; his father was a merchant, and Joseph himself began his working life at fifteen as an apprentice in a trading firm. He earned one hundred francs a month, a steady living that seemed to point toward a future in commerce. However, a quiet change occurred through the person he worked for, the uncle of the landscape painter Edmond De Schampheleer. This connection revealed a different path, leading Joseph to seek formal training under François-Joseph Navez.

The death of his father provided the moment of clarity needed to pursue his true interests. He moved to Brussels and enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1839. By 1841, he was a formal student of Navez, studying under the master for several years. This period of education grounded him in the Academic and Classicistic styles that would define his career. His studies were not limited to the classroom; they were fueled by the literature of his youth, specifically Dutch-language translations of Virgil and the Bible, which instilled in him a deep respect for classical themes.

          Travels and Artistic Growth

In 1847, Stallaert received the Prix de Rome, a scholarship that allowed him to travel through Europe. His path took him through France, but the political unrest of the 1848 Revolution forced him to alter his plans. He could not stay in Paris, so he continued toward Italy, visiting Turin, Genoa, Pisa, and Florence. This period of movement brought him into contact with other significant figures like Alexandre Cabanel and allowed him to study the works of Raphael. He arrived in Rome on 22 May 1848, finding a city caught in its own political turmoil, yet he remained there until 1852, eventually traveling through Venice and Germany before returning home.

Upon his return to Belgium, his professional life expanded beyond the studio. He took on significant roles within the academic community, serving as the Director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Tournai starting in 1852. Later, he returned to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he taught "Drawing and Painting from Nature" beginning in 1865. His dedication to the institution was long-lasting; he eventually rose to become the Acting Director and then the Director of the Brussels Academy in 1895.

          Legacy in Paint and Education

Stallaert is best remembered for his scenes from antiquity, executed with the precision of the Neoclassical tradition. His work often drew upon historical narratives, such as his painting for the Brussels Town Hall, The death of Everaard t'Serclaes, completed in 1854. Other notable works include La mort de Didon and L'heure de la sieste. These pieces reflect the influence of his mentors and the classical literature that shaped his early mind.

His career was marked by several honors, including a gold medal at the Brussels Salon in 1860 and being named an Officer in the Order of Leopold in 1881. He remained a fixture of the Brussels art scene until his retirement in 1900, following a mandatory retirement age set by the City Council. When he passed away in 1903, he left behind a legacy of both fine art and academic leadership, with his name still honored by streets in Ixelles and Uccle.
