          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

The port town of La Goulette, Tunisia, provides the setting for the birth of Albert Braïtou-Sala on February 16, 1885. Within the establishment of the White Fathers of Carthage, a vocation begins to take shape. This early exposure to the arts occurs in a structured environment, yet the stability of his youth is short-lived. In 1899, the death of his father, Moïse Sala, forces a sudden shift in the trajectory of his life. The necessity of providing for his family pulls him away from formal schooling and into the workforce.

Life becomes a matter of labor and survival. Albert Braïtou-Sala works as a clerk in a bakery and later finds employment as a collector in a large department store. These roles do not extinguish his interest in painting; instead, they exist alongside a persistent pursuit of his craft. He continues his artistic development at the school of painting in Tunisia. Under the guidance of his master, Maurice Bismouth, he refines his technique. During these formative years, his sisters provide the necessary subjects, serving as his models as he learns to translate the human form onto canvas.

Training and Early Success in Paris

The year 1901 marks a decisive shift. Leaving Tunisia behind, Albert moves to Paris to pursue formal training at the Académie Julian. The atmosphere of the city demands rigor. He enters the studios of Adolphe Déchenaud, Henri Royer, and Paul Albert Laurens, refining the technical precision that would define his career. The transition from a student in Carthage to a practitioner in the French capital accelerates his development.

Success arrives with sudden momentum. By 1913, his name appears in the Salon des artistes français, a regular presence in the prestigious exhibitions. The recognition is not merely professional but competitive. In 1916, he wins the prize for the best portraitist at the Académie Julian. This achievement signals his emergence as a specialist in the genre. His skill earns him a Silver medal at the Salon des artistes français, cementing his status within the Parisian art scene.

          Portraiture and Professional Career

The inter-war period finds Braïtou-Sala at the height of his influence. He establishes himself as a specialist in portraiture, capturing the likenesses of the era's social elite. Between 1919 and 1939, his studio produces several hundred social portraits. His brush meets the faces of famous actresses, including Jane Faber, Cléo de Mérode, and Renée Falconetti. These commissions cement his reputation in the Parisian art scene.

His professional standing reaches a global stage during the mid-to-late 1930s. Between 1936 and 1939, he represents France at the international exhibition held at the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh. He shares this prestigious platform with figures such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall. This period marks the peak of his public recognition before the disruptions of the following years.

          Later Years and Death

The shadows of the Second World War fundamentally altered the trajectory of his life. In 1942, the bureau des affaires juives identified him, and he was forbidden from working. This period of professional silence was marked by personal loss, as he lost a large part of his family in the Nazi concentration camps. Despite these hardships, he received protection from the father Dom Jean Olphe-Galliard of the Abbaye de la Source in Paris. By 1943, the commission de révision des naturalisations confirmed his French nationality.

The post-war years saw a quiet shift in his geography. In the early 1960s, he moved to the southeast of France. He lived through a period of relative obscurity until his death on September 29, 1972, in Arles, France.

Where to See the Works Today

His presence in French public collections remains significant, with several key pieces held in regional museums. In Poitiers, the Musée Sainte-Croix houses the 1931 Portrait of Éléna Olmazu. The Musée de l'Oise in Beauvais maintains the Portrait de Hubert Meuvissen, while the musée des Beaux-arts in Bordeaux holds Suzanne au bain.

The La Piscine Museum in Roubaix contains a concentrated selection of his output. This collection includes the 1929 work Vénus dite Vénus verte and the 1937 Portrait de Madame Revel. These works offer a direct look at the technical precision that defined his career during the inter-war years.
