His beginnings were unconventional; raised by his mother’s sister Bertha Cecilie after being born to a single mother, Ellen Cecilie Gjesdal, Krøyer's early life lacked the traditional stability often associated with artistic vocations. However, this perhaps fostered
an independent spirit and keen observational skills that would later define his work. He initially pursued law studies at the University of Copenhagen, but the allure of art proved too strong to resist.
