A Life of Law and Art

Louis Robbe was a Belgian painter, printmaker, and lawyer. Born in Kortrijk, Belgium, he initially pursued a legal career, studying at the University of Ghent and eventually practicing as a judge of peace and an attorney. Despite his legal profession, his talent for drawing was evident from his youth. Under the guidance of Jan Baptiste de Jonghe, he began painting in oil in 1833, eventually becoming a student of Eugène Verboeckhoven.

His artistic journey was marked by significant civic involvement in his hometown, where he helped found the Société des Beaux-Arts and served as a director of the Academy. As his career progressed, he moved to Brussels, where he balanced his duties as a magistrate with his life as a painter. He also managed an art studio, teaching several students, including Henri Baert and Laurent De Beul.

The works of Louis Robbe primarily focus on landscapes and animals. His compositions often depict scenes such as:

His style evolved over time; while his early work was close to that of Verboeckhoven, his technique became more realistic by 1860, characterized by lighter colors. His paintings have been exhibited at various venues, including the Salon de Bruxelles and the Exposition universelle in Paris. He was a recipient of several honors, including being named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur.
