Franz Meerts: the artist
The Life and Artistic Practice of Franz Meerts
Franz Meerts was a Belgian painter and aquarellist born in Ghent. His artistic education began in his hometown at the Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent, before he moved to Brussels to study in the private art studio of Jean-François Portaels. Throughout his career, Meerts demonstrated a versatile range of subjects, becoming known for his interior scenes, genre scenes, still lifes, and landscapes. His genre scenes frequently depicted Catholic clergy, monks, notaries, and lawyers within their offices, often rendered with pleasant colors and a sentimental or humorous touch.
Beyond his original compositions, Meerts was a skilled copyist. Commissioned by the Belgian government, he traveled to Spain and Italy to copy the works of great masters, an experience that allowed him to study the technique of the fresco. His professional contributions included copying works of Dirck Bouts for the Leuven Town Hall and restoring the murals of St. Peter's Church in Anderlecht.
Associations and Academic Contributions
Meerts was deeply involved in the Belgian art community, co-founding two significant artist associations in Brussels. The first, L'Union des Arts, operated from 1876 to 1885 and organized exhibitions in Meerts's personal studio. He later co-founded the association Voorwaarts in 1885, an organization for young artists with the motto "Hooger is ons doel". This association held exhibitions at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
In addition to his organizational work, Meerts served as the director of the Art Academy of Soignies for over twenty years. He was also an author and publisher, co-authoring the illustrated history "La Belgique illustrée". He passed away in Brussels in May 1896.
