          Biography

A Life Shaped by Berlin and Paris

Born in Berlin in 1787, Karl Wilhelm Wach began his path in the halls of the Prussian Academy of Arts. He learned his early craft under the guidance of Karl Kretschmar, a period of study that laid the foundation for a long career. Even as a young man of twenty, he was already handling significant responsibilities, such as when he was asked to paint an altar piece for the Paretz village church. This work, Christ with Four Apostles, appeared in 1807.

His life took him far beyond the borders of Prussia. After a period of service in the Prussian army between 1813 and 1815, Wach moved to Paris. It was in this city that his artistic circle expanded significantly. Alongside William Hensel, he became a pupil of Antoine Jean Gros and Jacques-Louis David. These years in France brought new perspectives that would later inform his return to Germany.

In 1817, a long study trip to Italy allowed him to look back at the masters of the Quattrocento. While many artists of his era looked toward contemporary trends, Wach found himself deeply moved by the work of Raphael. This connection to classical foundations remained a quiet strength in his later years.

          The Studio and the School

When Wach returned to Berlin in 1819, he established himself as a freelance artist. His presence in the city grew through both his commissions and his dedication to teaching. The Prussian king, Frederick William III, provided him with premises that housed a studio which eventually transformed into a school. By 1837, this space was home to nearly seventy pupils, many of whom went on to build their own professional paths.

His professional standing within the Prussian Academy of Arts was marked by several honors. He was appointed a member of the Academy in 1820 and eventually received the title of professor. In 1827, to celebrate his fortieth birthday, he was officially named a royal painter. Despite the heavy demands of managing so many students, he continued to produce significant individual works.

          Notable Works and Legacy

The paintings produced by Wach often reflected the subjects of high importance to the Prussian court and the church. His 1812 painting of Königin Luise marked a major moment in his career. Other notable pieces include:

          • The Three Himmlischen Virtues, located in the Friedrichswerder Church in Berlin
          • Madonna picture, created in 1826 for Prince Frederik of the Netherlands
          • Bildnis Bettina von Savigny, painted in 1834
          • Judith with the head of the Holofernes, completed in 1838
          • Königin Elisabeth von Preußen, from 1840

Wach passed away in 1845, leaving behind a legacy defined by his dual role as a creator and an educator. His influence lived on through the many artists he trained in his Berlin studio, ensuring that his approach to the German School of the nineteenth century continued through the next generation.
