A Nostalgic Reimagining of the Mid-Century Aesthetic
Born in 1961, Pauline Aubert has cultivated a practice that serves as a profound dialogue with the historical gaze of mid-century print media. Her work transcends mere imitation, instead performing a sophisticated reconstruction of the Vintage Comic aesthetic. By utilizing digital tools to emulate the tactile imperfections of the 1950s, Aubert captures a sense of luminous structure that feels both ancient and strikingly modern.
The Alchemy of Color and Dot
At the heart of Aubert's technical mastery lies her meticulous application of the CMYK halftone dot pattern. Through the strategic use of Ben-Day dots, she creates a rhythmic texture that defines form and shadow, imbuing her digital images with a tactile silence. Her palette relies on offset primary colors and bold black ink outlines, evoking the high-contrast energy of classic animation while maintaining a nuanced control over light and atmosphere.
