Biography

The Convergence of Tradition and Digital Precision

Born in 1970 in the historic heart of Lyon, Olivier Rivière has cultivated a practice that serves as a profound bridge between contemporary digital innovation and the timeless aesthetics of the Edo period. His work is not merely an imitation of the past but a reimagining of the Ukiyo-e print through a modern lens. By stripping away the complexities of Western perspective, Rivière focuses on the luminous structure of his subjects, utilizing bold black ink outlines to define form and movement within a flattened, two-dimensional plane.

Mastery of the Floating World

At the soul of Rivière's practice lies an obsession with the tactile silence found in traditional Japanese woodblock prints. Each digital composition is meticulously crafted to emulate the organic texture of ink pressed onto aged rice paper, creating a visual dialogue between the ephemeral and the permanent. His use of flat color fields avoids depth in favor of graphic impact, allowing the viewer to engage with the subject through pure shape and rhythmic line, effectively capturing the essence of the "floating world."
