Margo Lewers: the artist
An Interdisciplinary Visionary
Margo Lewers was an Australian interdisciplinary abstract artist whose creative reach extended across various media, including painting, sculpture, tapestry, ceramics, and the domestic arts. Born in Mosman, Australia, her early compositions were characterized by an exploration of color and formal geometric abstraction. As her career progressed, her work evolved to become more fluid and expressionist by the early 1960s. Beyond the canvas, she was renowned for her landscaping and interior design, particularly for the family home at Emu Plains.
Her professional journey included the operation of Notanda Galleries, a design consultancy based on Bauhaus principles that stocked pottery, furniture, and handprinted objects. Lewers's artistic output was recognized through numerous accolades, having won at least fourteen awards and prizes. Her legacy is preserved through the Penrith Regional Gallery and Lewers Bequest, which stands on her property at Emu Plains.
Exhibitions and Public Commissions
Throughout her career, Lewers exhibited extensively in Australia and participated in several international travelling exhibitions. Her work has been held in numerous prestigious public collections, including:
Lewers received significant commissions for public spaces, such as the work Expansion for the Reserve Bank in Canberra and a tapestry for the Reserve Bank of Australia's boardroom. In 1957, she and Gerald Lewers were commissioned to create a garden of pebbles, cacti, and sandstone for the MLC Building in North Sydney.
