          Biography

          The Life of Jan Janssens

Born in Ghent, Jan Janssens was a Flemish Baroque painter and draftsman. During the period of 1619-1620, he traveled to Rome, eventually returning to Ghent in 1621. Upon his return, he was admitted as a master to the Ghent Guild of St. Luke, later serving as dean of the guild from 1634-1635 and again in 1646. He married Petronilla de Rop in 1623, with whom he had six children. His residence, known as De Pijl (The Arrow), was sold following his death in Ghent around 1650.

          Artistic Style and Subject Matter

Janssens is recognized as a leading figure among the Ghent Caravaggisti. His work is characterized by a sober realism and dramatic effects, utilizing hidden light to illuminate figures and create emotional impact. His compositions often focused on large-format biblical and mythological themes, with a particular emphasis on Christ crowned with thorns and the mocking of Christ. He also frequently depicted the Caritas Romana and various versions of the Resurrection of Christ.

His technical approach involved a meticulous depiction of textures, including:

One of his notable works is The Martyrdom of Saint Barbara, located in Saint Michael's Church, Ghent.
