          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Héctor Basaldúa was born in Pergamino, in the Buenos Aires Province, in September 1894. His early years were shaped by a steady focus on the fundamentals of form and line. In 1914, he began his formal studies in drawing at the Academia de Augusto Bolognini. This period of study provided the foundation for a career that would eventually span painting, sculpture, scenography, and illustration. He later continued his education at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes, where he worked alongside other emerging figures of the time.

By 1923, his technical proficiency was recognized when he obtained his title as a Professor of Drawing. This qualification marked a significant step in his professional development, moving him from a student of form to a formal practitioner of the craft. His training was not limited to the classroom; it was a process of absorbing the mechanics of sight and the discipline required to translate them onto a surface. He was the father of Emilio Basaldúa.

          Training and Activity in Europe

In 1923, a decree from the government of the province of Buenos Aires provided the means for a move to Europe. This scholarship allowed for a period of study and refinement in the studios of Paris. The focus was on the technical foundations of drawing and the evolving structures of modern composition.

The training took place within the walls of the Academia Colarossi, where the lessons of Charles Guérin were central to his development. His time in Paris was shaped by the specific guidance of several instructors. He worked under the direction of André Lhote, Othon Friesz, and Othon Triesz. These years in Europe provided the technical grounding that would later inform his approach to both the canvas and the stage.

          Career in Scenography and Illustration

His work moved frequently between the stage and the printed page. In 1931, he designed the scenography for Las Bodas de Fígaro. This period of theatrical work led to a long tenure at the Teatro Colón, where he served as the Scenography Director from 1933 to 1950. His presence in the theater was a constant part of the building's life for nearly two decades.

The precision required for the stage translated into his work as an illustrator. He contributed to the 1932 Fausto lithographs and provided illustrations for Los consejos del Viejo Vizcacha in Martín Fierro. These projects required a specific way of seeing, translating characters and settings into lines that could be read clearly on paper. His visual language was also applied to the screen, notably through his work on the 1965 film Gotán.

          Technique and Artistic Style

His early work emerged during the period known as the retorno al orden. In these formative years, the structural logic of post-cubism met the emotional weight of expressionism. This blending of influences shaped how he approached the canvas, moving away from purely academic traditions toward a more modern, organized sense of space. He focused his attention on portraits, nudes, still lifes, and various compositions, using these subjects to test the balance between form and feeling.

As a member of the Grupo de París, his approach reflected a shift in the Argentine art scene. He moved toward a visual language that favored clarity and structure. His brushwork and compositions sought to find order within the subject matter, whether he was working on a simple still life or a more complex figure. The influence of his training in Paris remains visible in the way he handled volume and light, creating a sense of weight and presence in his subjects.
