          Biography

          Early Life, Family and Training

Christen Brun was born on 30 May 1828 in Bergen, Norway, into a family of established standing. He was the son of Johan Lyder Brun and Karen Claudine Ulrikke Brun. His upbringing in Bergen provided the foundation for a life dedicated to the visual arts, though his path would eventually lead him far from the Norwegian coast.

His formal instruction began in 1845 when he became a student of the landscape painter Hans Leganger Reusch. This early exposure to the natural world was followed by a shift toward the human form. In 1847, he moved to Christiania to study under the portrait painter Johan Gørbitz. These formative years in Norway allowed him to refine his technical skills before seeking broader European influences.

The trajectory of his development took a decisive turn toward the continent. Between 1848 and 1850, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. During this period, he worked under the guidance of Professor C.F. Sohn. This academic rigor in Germany helped shape the historical and portrait styles that would define his professional career.

          Artistic Training and Early Career

The formative years of Brun's professional life were defined by the rigorous academic traditions of the Düsseldorf School. After his initial studies, he moved to Düsseldorf to study under Professor C.F. Sohn between 1848 and 1850. This period of intense instruction was marked by his growing involvement in the local art scene, specifically through his membership in the Malkasten artists' association during 1850 and 1851. His development was not confined to the classroom; he sought the light and classical influences of Italy, spending the years between 1850 and 1852 in Rome.

Upon returning to Düsseldorf, Brun continued to refine his technique through private study. From 1852 onwards, he worked under the guidance of Otto Mengelberg. This period of mentorship helped solidify his ability to handle the historical and religious subjects that would characterize much of his output. His talent was recognized by the state, which provided him with travel grants in 1851, 1855, and 1875, allowing him to expand his horizons beyond the borders of Norway.

          Notable Works and Commissions

Brun’s output was defined by a deep engagement with religious and historical subjects, often working within the established traditions of the Düsseldorf school. His skill in handling complex theological narratives led to significant ecclesiastical commissions. In Oslo, he provided the Sagene church with an altarpiece titled Kreuzabneahme Christi. He also contributed to the Trinity Church in Oslo by producing a replica of a work by Adolph Tidemand. These religious paintings demonstrated his ability to navigate the formal requirements of church decoration while maintaining a sense of historical weight.

His technical facility was further evidenced by his ability to interpret the works of the Old Masters. He produced a painting of Le Christ et la femme pénitente, which was a careful copy after Rubens. This practice of studying and replicating the great masters was a common facet of his professional life, allowing him to refine his command of light and composition. Beyond these large-scale religious works, his catalog includes Peter Pavels Aabel, dated about 1851, which reflects the breadth of his early interests.
