          Biography

          The Archangel Specialist

In the bustling workshops of Madrid, a specific kind of devotion takes shape through oil and canvas. Bartolomé Román, born in Montoro, Córdoba, around 1587, moves through the Spanish Baroque not as a generalist, but as a specialist of the celestial. His hands find their rhythm in the depiction of the Seven Archangels, a thematic focus that would define his legacy and carry his imagery across the Atlantic to the Americas. He is a painter of the divine hierarchy, translating the spiritual into the tangible through a style that blends Venetian spatial concepts with the heavy influence of Flemish and Venetian traditions.

His early career is marked by a complex relationship with his supposed teacher, Vicente Carducho. While historical records from 1614 suggest a legal dispute between the two, the brushwork tells a different story. By 1616, his signed works already reveal the shadow of Carducho’s hand, a stylistic debt that he would eventually navigate, perhaps even moving into the orbit of the workshop of Diego Velázquez. This connection to the royal collections and the high circles of Madrid allowed his work to reach the most prestigious religious institutions of the era.

          Celestial Iconography

The compositions are structured around the specific functions of the angels, often accompanied by explanatory inscriptions that guide the viewer's prayer. These are not mere portraits but functional tools of devotion. Each figure carries the weight of its specific duty:

          • San Miguel, wielding a spear and a palm, receiving souls in their final agony.
          • San Gabriel, holding a lantern and lilies, to inspire obedience to divine inspiration.
          • San Rafael, identified by the fish in his hand, for those seeking true penance.
          • San Sealtiel, carrying a censer to aid in prayer.
          • San Jehudiel, adorned with a crown of flowers and disciplines.
          • San Baraquiel, scattering flowers across the scene.
          • San Uriel, characterized by the presence of a sword.

This series of angels, found in locations such as the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales and the Monasterio de la Encarnación in Madrid, became a successful export. The demand for these specific iconographies was so high that many copies traveled to Lima, Peru, ensuring his visual language became part of the colonial religious landscape.

          The Final Years

By the time he drafted his will in May 1647, the reality of Román's life was far from the celestial splendor of his subjects. The documents reveal a man living in a struggling economic situation, a stark contrast to the divine abundance he painted. He leaves behind a wife, Mary of Thebes, and a legacy that includes the training of the next generation, most notably the painter Juan Carreño de Miranda. He died in Madrid in 1647, leaving behind a body of work that remains anchored in the specific, disciplined devotion of the Spanish Baroque.
