Jacopo Carucci, známější jako Jacopo Pontormo, zůstává postavou hlubokého a často fascinujícího tajemna v dějinách umění. Narodil se v roce 1494 v malém toskánském městečku Pontorme poblíž Empoli a jeho osud nevedl k konvenčnímu uměleckému vychování. Osamotněl již v raném věku a putoval mezi různými florentinskými dílnami – nejprve u Leonarda da Vinci, poté u Mariotta Albertinelliho a Piera di Cosimo, než nakonec našel domov u Andrea del Sarta. Jeho raný výcvik byl definován přísnou disciplínou vrcholné renesance. Přestože však od těchto vážených mistrů vstřebal principy perspektivy, anatomie a klasické kompozice, Pontormo si nakonec vybudoval zcela vlastní cestu. Stal se klíčovou postavou přechodu k manierismu a hluboce ovlivnil celé následující generace umělců.
