Identification of Lord Nelson - by Arthur Devis

We find ourselves looking at Lord Nelson -, a portrait executed by the English painter Arthur William Devis. This work presents a man dressed in formal military attire from the late 18th or early 19th century. He is depicted wearing a black coat accented with gold epaulettes on the shoulders, worn over a white shirt. The subject's high rank is further signaled by the various medals and decorations pinned to his chest.

The figure is adorned with a tall, black bicorne hat, a style characteristic of the officers of that era. A large plume rests on the left side of the hat, adding a sense of ceremony to his appearance. His expression is serious, and he meets the viewer's gaze directly. The background remains a muted, dark tone, which allows the details of the uniform and the man's facial features to remain the primary focus of the composition.

The Composition and Visual Elements

The portrait is rendered in a realistic style, focusing on the precise details of military regalia and facial character. The subject is positioned centrally, wearing a black coat accented by gold epaulettes on the shoulders. Beneath the coat, a white shirt is visible, providing a sharp contrast to the dark fabric of the uniform. A tall, black bicorne hat rests upon his head, featuring a large plume on the left side that adds a sense of ceremonial weight to his presence.

His expression is serious, and he maintains a direct gaze toward the viewer, establishing an immediate sense of connection. This steady look is framed by neatly styled hair and the structured lines of his attire. The background is composed of muted, dark tones, which recede into shadow to ensure the figure remains the primary focus of the work. This deliberate use of light and shadow emphasizes the textures of the clothing and the contours of the face.

Related Works by Arthur Devis

The breadth of Devis's output is considerable, with approximately sixty-five paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy throughout his career. His hand was frequently called upon to capture the likenesses of the era's most prominent figures. He produced a portrait of Sir William Jones and painted depictions of Lord Howe and Sir Roger Newdigate. These works reflect the artist's ability to navigate the social hierarchies of the time through careful portraiture.

His engagement with maritime history is particularly notable. Beyond this portrait, Devis created a depiction of Nelson's death and a posthumous portrait honoring Admiral Horatio Nelson. He also captured King George III on horseback, demonstrating a versatility that extended from intimate character studies to grander, more formal compositions. His ability to move between these different modes of representation defines much of his surviving oeuvre.
