The origins of this installation lie in a transformed abandoned council flat in South London. To achieve this crystalline state, approximately 75,000 litres of copper sulphate solution were pumped into the waterproofed dwelling. Over time, chemical reactions allowed the blue crystals to expand and encrust every reachable surface, turning a mundane domestic setting into a site of intense, biological-scale change. The sheer weight of the material is palpable, as the installation once filled the entire volume of the flat with its heavy, liquid presence.
This method of facilitating change allows the artwork to exist in a state of provocative ambiguity. By utilizing elements that mimic the properties of liquid and light, the work achieves a sense of weightlessness despite its massive physical scale.
