The artist's signature, Henrietta Rae, is located at the bottom right corner of the canvas.

The title The Ring suggests a specific narrative or a physical object. This object may be the item held by the figure on the left, or the title may carry a symbolic meaning related to the interaction between the two women. The painting is enclosed in an ornate frame featuring intricate patterns and gold leaf detailing. The figures are rendered with a focus on realistic detail and anatomical accuracy.

Composition and Visual Elements

The composition features two female figures positioned within a dark, indeterminate background. On the left, a woman is dressed in a white garment. She holds a small musical instrument, such as a lute or a guitar, with both hands. Her head is tilted slightly toward the instrument. To the right, a second woman wears a brown garment. This figure is oriented toward the first woman, observing her actions. The arrangement of the figures creates a central focus on their interaction against the shadowed backdrop.

Lighting enters the scene from the left side of the frame. This light source illuminates the white fabric of the first woman's clothing and casts shadows across the right side of the figures' faces. The contrast between the illuminated subjects and the dark background defines the contours of the figures and their clothing. The painting is enclosed in an ornate frame characterized by intricate patterns and gold leaf detailing.

Related Works by Henrietta Rae

The artist's body of work includes several pieces focused on classical and literary themes. In 1885, she produced Elaine Guarding the Shield of Lancelot. This was followed by Eurydice Sinking Back to Hades in 1886. These early works established her interest in mythological and narrative subjects. Her 1891 painting, The Lady with the Lamp, depicts Florence Nightingale at Scutari. This specific work is frequently reproduced and is often referred to by that title rather than its formal name, Miss Nightingale at Scutari.

Later compositions demonstrate her ability to manage complex arrangements of figures. Her 1894 work, Psyche at the Throne of Venus, measures 12 by 7 feet and contains thirteen figures. This large-scale canvas shows her technical approach to composition. In 1900, she painted Sir Richard Whittington Dispensing His Charities, which depicts the medieval merchant and a four-time Lord Mayor of London. Her later output includes Mariana, which was painted about 1905.
