This upbringing would prove foundational, shaping the designer who would later redefine elegance at houses like Lanvin and through his own innovative label, AZ Factory. His journey began not with grand ambition, but with a simple love of creating, sketching designs from a young age and finding solace in the transformative power of clothing.
From Morocco to Parisian Couture
Elbaz’s path to fashion prominence wasn't immediate. After studying at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem, he embarked on a period of apprenticeship and exploration, honing his skills across various ateliers. He spent time working with Geoffrey Beene in New York, then moved to Paris where he contributed to Guy Laroche and Yves Saint Laurent. These experiences were crucial; they provided Elbaz with a deep understanding of the intricacies of garment construction, the demands of the industry, and the diverse aesthetics that defined Parisian couture. However, it was his appointment as creative director of Lanvin in 2001 that truly catapulted him to international acclaim.
