En 1862, il fut élu membre honoraire de la National Academy of Design et académicien en 1871. Richards a produit de nombreuses vues aquarellées acclamées des White Mountains, dont plusieurs se trouvent aujourd’hui dans la collection du Metropolitan Museum of Art.
