Linder Sterling: life and work

The Art and Performance of Linder Sterling

Linder Sterling is a British artist born in Liverpool. Her creative practice encompasses photography, radical feminist photomontage, and confrontational performance art. Beyond her visual work, she was the former frontwoman of the Manchester-based post-punk group Ludus. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at the Tate Modern, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. In 2017, she was honored with the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award.

Her photomontage work utilizes a punk cut-and-paste sensibility to explore themes of rebellion, gender, commodity critique, and the body. Sterling's studio practice involves working from boxes of cut-outs, often accompanied by Indian drone music and the scent of perfume. Her performance art has included works such as The Ultimate Form, a collaboration with choreographer Kenneth Tindall, and Children of the Stain.

Exhibitions and Public Works

Sterling's work has been the subject of numerous international solo exhibitions, including presentations at the Nottingham Contemporary, Kestnergesellschaft, and the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris. Her pieces are held in several prestigious collections, including:

In 2018, she received a commission from Art on the Underground to create a public art work at Southwark station. This project, titled The Bower of Bliss, consisted of an 85-metre long street-level photomontage billboard and a cover commission for the 29th edition of the pocket Tube map.
