A Life in Art and Craft

Jan Baptist Herregouts was a Flemish painter, etcher, printmaker, and brewer. Born in Roermond, Netherlands, he was the son of the painter David Herregouts and Cecilia Genits. He likely received his initial training under his father and may have undertaken a study tour to Italy. His professional journey saw him working in Antwerp, where he became a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, and later in Bruges, where he became a master in the Bruges Guild of Saint Luke in 1684. He held various leadership positions within the guild and was one of the four artists who contributed funds toward the creation of a drawing academy in Bruges in 1717.

In addition to his artistic pursuits, Herregouts was married to Anna-Pieternelle Timmermans, and the couple likely operated a beer brewery in Bruges. He died in Bruges and was buried in the St James Church.

Artistic Legacy and Works

Herregouts was a successful history and portrait painter, known for his many altar pieces and religious works produced for the churches of Bruges. His etchings were executed in a pleasant and loose style, and he was noted for a much admired palette. His body of work includes:

While he is associated with several portraits, including a self-portrait and a portrait of his father, some art historians have suggested these may be the work of his brother, Hendrik.
