A Life in Paris

Henri Michel-Lévy was a French impressionist painter born in Passy, France. He was the third of four sons born to Michel Lévy and Thérèse Emerique, a Jewish couple from the Lorraine province. His father, Michel Lévy, was a wealthy publisher in Paris. During his training, Michel-Lévy studied under the painters Félix Barrias and Antoine Vollon.

From 1868 to 1878, his works were cataloged at the annual Paris Salon under the names Henri-Michel Lévy or Michel Lévy; he adopted the name Henri Michel-Lévy from 1879 onwards. Beyond his painting, he was an art collector whose collection included works by Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, Delacroix, Hubert Robert, Prud'hon, and Tiepolo. He died in Paris.
