About the artist, Joseph Ehrismann

1880–1937, France

Joseph Ehrismann

The Light of Alsace The son of a Catholic baker in Mutzig, Joseph Ehrismann grew up in a landscape shaped by the shifting borders of Alsace-Lorraine. His early years were rooted in the small towns of the region, a place where the light through a window carries the weight of local history. He moved from the quiet life of a baker's son to the studios of Strasbourg and Munich, seeking to understand how color and glass might hold a space. Between 1906 and 1912, he studied under Auguste Cammissar in Strasbourg, later moving to Munich to work with Martin von Feuerstein.
