Portrait of a Gentleman in his Study (detail)

1530 · Oil On Canvas · Gallerie dell'Accademia di Venezia, Venedig

To stand before this depiction of a gentleman in his study is to step across the threshold into a world steeped in contemplation and cultivated refinement. The air seems thick with the scent of aged paper, polished wood, and perhaps the faint, sweet echo of music from the nearby violin. This portrait does more than merely record a likeness; it captures an entire state of being—the quiet authority vested in…

Christ Taking Leave of his Mother

1521 · Acrylic On Canvas · Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Berlin

Lorenzo Lotto's “Christ Taking Leave of His Mother,” painted in 1521, isn’t merely a depiction of a poignant farewell; it’s a profound meditation on faith, familial love, and the impending sorrow that shadows Christ’s journey to Jerusalem. Allegory of Virtue and Vice (detail)

1505 · Oil On Canvas · National Gallery of Art, Washington

Lorenzo Lotto's “Allegory of Virtue and Vice,” a remarkably preserved panel painting from 1505, isn’t merely a depiction of figures; it’s a meticulously crafted stage for an eternal struggle. Holding court within a dramatic, almost theatrical space—a strip of land receding into a turbulent sea beneath a brooding sky—Lotto presents a scene both profoundly unsettling and deeply resonant with human experience. The painting immediately commands attention not through overt grandeur,…

Portrait of a crossbowman (Mastro Battista di Rocca Contrada)

1551 · Oil On Canvas · Capitoline Museums, Rom

A man emerges from a heavy, ink-black shadow. He is Mastro Battista di Rocca Contrada, a man defined by the tool he holds. His hands grip a wooden crossbow, the grain of the timber rendered with a tactile, weathered precision. He does not look away. His gaze is a direct line, steady and heavy with a quiet, internal tension. The light catches the ridge of his nose and the coarse…

Friar Angelo Ferretti as Saint Peter Martyr (1549) af Lorenzo Lotto

Friar Angelo Ferretti as Saint Peter Martyr

1549 · Oil On Canvas · Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge

A single knife is embedded in the shoulder of the man, a sharp intrusion against the pale skin. He sits in a heavy, dark habit, the coarse fabric absorbing the light. His gaze is fixed, heavy with a quiet suffering that feels more like a settled fact than a sudden pain. The background is a void of deep browns and blacks, pushing his figure forward into the viewer's space. He…

Madonna and Child with Saints and an Angel (detail) -

1528 · Oil

The focus rests upon the soft curve of a mother’s silhouette and the weight of a child held in her arms. In this detail, the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child occupy the center of a sacred geometry. Their presence is framed by the delicate presence of angels, one hovering near the crown of Mary's head, while others occupy the space to the right. Behind them, the landscape rises in…

This oil-on-canvas work, currently residing within the Staatliche Museen in Berlin, transcends simple religious iconography to become a deeply emotive portrait of vulnerability and resilience. Lotto, a master of his craft known for…

Homily of St. Dominic in Recanati

1508 · Oil On Canvas · Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wien

The air in the Recanati town square feels heavy with the weight of spoken words. Sunlight washes over the brick buildings, casting soft shadows that give volume to the crowd gathered below. At the center of this communal moment, St. Dominic occupies an elevated wooden pulpit, his figure commanding the attention of the assembly. He is a pillar of spiritual energy, delivering a sermon that seems to ripple through the…

Lorenzo Lotto: kunstneren

A Venetian Wanderer: The Life and Art of Lorenzo Lotto

Blending Traditions: Style and Influences

Portraits of the Soul: Lotto’s Masterpieces

A Rediscovered Legacy: Historical Significance
