Adam Elsheimer, jméno které se možná nejeví tak okamžitě jako u jeho barokních kolegů Rubens nebo Rembrandt, přesto zaujímá klíčovou pozici v historii umění. Narodil se v Frankfurtu nad Mohanem v roce 1578 a jeho tragicky krátký život – zemřel ve věku pouhých třiceti dvou let v Římě v roce 1610 – kontrastoval s uměleckým dílem, které rezonovalo hluboko u jeho vrstevníků a dodnes okouzluje diváky. Jeho otec, mistr krejčí, poskytl stabilní výchovu a mladý Adamův talent byl rozpoznán prostřednictvím učebnictví u místního umělce Philippa Uffenbacha. Itálie se ukázala jako transformační. Strávil zde značné množství času ve Věnce, absorboval živé palety barev a dramatické kompozice mistrů jako Tintoretto a Paolo Veronese. Vliv těchto benátských gigantů je patrný v jeho raných pracích – sebedobost tvaru a smyslné použití světla, které se staly charakteristickými rysy jeho stylu. Kolem roku 1600 se usadil v Římě a rychle se integroval do rušícího se uměleckého společenství. Následovala klíčová doba jako asistent pro Johana Rottenhammera. Tento vztah poskytl neocenitelné technické odborné znalosti, zejména v náročném médiu malby na měděných deskách. Nicméně Elsheimer se nespoléhal pouze na kopírování svého učitele; začal formovat svůj vlastní jedinečný směr, odklánějíc se od přísných manýrských konvencí směrem k naturalistickému přístupu. Jeho krajiny, zejména, byly inovativní pro svou dobu, plynule integrují postavy do harmonických přírodních prostředí. Kultivoval důležité vztahy s Giovannim Faberem, papežským lékařem, botanikem a sběratelem původně z Bamberku, a Paul Brilem, flamským malířem, který trvale žil v Římě, kteří později (společně s Faberem) byli svědky při svatbě Elsheimera s Carol Antoniou. Tyto spojení ho vystavily novým myšlenkám a podpořily intelektuální zvědavost, která informovala jeho umění.
