The Physicality of Crystalline Growth
The installation Seizure 2008/2013 occupies a space defined by deep blue tones and mineral textures. The work originated from the transformation of an abandoned council flat in South London, specifically at 157 Harper Road. To create this environment, the interior of the property was waterproofed and filled with approximately 75,000 litres of copper sulphate solution. Over a period of time, chemical reactions allowed blue crystals to grow across the surfaces of the walls, floor, ceiling, and even the bathtub. The resulting visual field is characterized by a dense, cerulean crust that encrusts the architectural bones of the building. Light interacts with these jagged, translucent structures, creating shadows within the recesses of the crystal formations. The texture is granular and sharp to the touch.
Material Process and Spatial Transformation
The technique employed by Roger Hiorns relies on facilitated chemical change rather than traditional manual modeling. By utilizing a saturated solution, the artist allowed the architecture to be colonized by inorganic matter. This process turned a domestic interior into a site of geological-scale growth. The blue copper sulphate crystals create a monochromatic environment that obscures the original identity of the room. In certain views, the installation presents as a corridor or a cavernous void where the boundaries between the structural walls and the crystalline mass are blurred. The weight of the material is palpable, as the sheer volume of the solution once occupied the entire volume of the flat. This method of using chemical reactions to dictate form moves the practice away from static sculpture toward an active, transformative event.
Atmosphere and Perceptual Impact
The visual effect of Seizure 2008/2013 is one of profound stillness and heavy saturation. The dominance of blue hues—ranging from deep sapphire to lighter cerulean—establishes a cool, submerged atmosphere. Because the crystals cover every reachable surface, the viewer experiences a sense of enclosure within an alien, aquatic-like realm. The repetition of the crystalline texture creates a rhythmic, almost biological intensity. There is a tension between the industrial origin of the copper sulphate and the organic appearance of the resulting growth. This encounter with a transformed domestic space forces a reconsideration of how materials can inhabit and alter a pre-existing structure. The work remains part of the Arts Council Collection and has been displayed at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
