Villa Flora

The History of Villa Flora

Located in Winterthur, Switzerland, Villa Flora was originally constructed in 1846. The building served as the private residence of Hedy Hahnloser-Bühler (1873–1952) and Arthur Hahnloser (1870–1936). During their time in the house, the couple established a significant collection of art. Between 1906 and 1936, they assembled a series of works that would eventually form the basis of the institution's holdings.

The collection is currently owned by the Hahnloser/Jaeggli-Stiftung. This foundation maintains the works gathered by the Hahnlosers, ensuring the continuity of their acquisitions. The site remains a central component of the Kunst Museum Winterthur, preserving the specific artistic interests developed by its former residents.

Architecture and Building Style

The Villa Flora is a cornerstone of the Kunst Museum Winterthur. Originally built in 1846, the structure underwent a significant renovation in 1908. During this period, architects Rittmeyer and Furrer redesigned the building in the Art Nouveau style. This transformation established the villa as a Jugendstil-Villa, characterized by the specific aesthetic movements of that era.

The building functions as one of three distinct architectural landmarks within the museum's three-location complex. Its spatial arrangement reflects the historical residential use of the site, which was once the home of Hedy Hahnloser-Bühler and Arthur Hahnloser. The interior layout includes several specialized rooms, such as the Library, the Green Room, and the Veranda, which provide a structured environment for the permanent collection.

The Art Collection and Movements

The collection is defined by the core movements of Post-Impressionism, Nabis, and Fauves. It comprises 104 paintings and 110 original works on paper. The holdings also include 195 prints and 21 sculptures. These works reflect the personal interests of the collectors who assembled them, focusing on the evolution of modernism through the turn of the century.

The selection includes significant figures such as Manet, Cézanne, and van Gogh. The presence of Redon, Matisse, and Toulouse-Lautrec establishes a strong connection to French modernism. Other artists represented in the collection are Manguin, Maillol, Marquet, Vuillard, Renoir, Denis, and Wield. The breadth of the collection is further extended by the works of Félix Vallotton, Pierre Bonnard, Ferdinand Hodler, and Giovanni Giacometti.

Masterpieces of the Collection

The collection contains significant works from the Post-Impressionist and Fauvist movements. Vincent van Gogh is represented by The Fourteenth of July Celebration in Paris, 1886. Paul Cézanne is present through The roofs. Henri Rousseau contributes Landscape with clocktower, 1890. These pieces reflect the specific interests of the original collectors, Arthur and Hedy Hahnloser.

The holdings also include works by Paul Gauguin, such as Apples and Bowl, and Albert Marquet, including National Holiday at Le Havre, 1906. Henri Matisse is represented by Nice, Black Notebook, 1918. The selection of works on paper and paintings provides a focused view of early twentieth-century modernism.

This update ensures the preservation of the works within the historic setting while modernizing the visitor experience. The layout of the exhibition reflects the recent efforts to present the holdings in their intended context.
